The Best Shoes for New Runners

Getting a proper pair of running shoes when you start running is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Not athletic shoes, RUNNING shoes. You want something that supports your foot and helps keep your body stabilized. If you're running with everyday athletic sneakers you'll be much more prone to injuries such as shin splints, ankle sprains, knee pain, the list goes on and on. You should replace your shoes every 6-8 months or 400 miles.

Three important tips for buying shoes online:

  • Find something with proper tread on the bottom of the shoe. There should be firm ridges, you don’t want a flat or slick bottom like a basketball shoe or flyknit

  • Make sure you have a spacious feel. When shopping for shoes you should size up half a size more than what you normally wear. Your running shoes should never feel snug. When you run your feet swell, having the extra room will help you stay comfortable and keep you from losing toenails as you increase your mileage (yes, it really does happen)

  • Don’t shop for pretty shoes! I get it, if you’re going to make the investment you don’t want to be walking around in something that looks ugly on your feet. You want to show them off! But this should not be your deciding factor. It’s time to make peace with the fact that most running shoes aren’t the cutest looking things around.

Normally I would recommend someone just getting started to go to a local running shoe store to get properly fitted. Since that's not an option right now I've linked some of my favorite, most versatile running shoes for men and women. There are many brands that I love but I think Brooks has the best line of shoes especially for people looking to start running.

These are only a couple of my tops picks. I have many more ideas and recommendations in my arsenal. Feel free to shoot me a note if you need help choosing the right shoe .

Womens Shoes

Brooks Glycerin:

These provide incredible cushion and comfort and work well for walkers and runners. Because they feel like you’re wearing pillows on your feet they are a bulkier shoe but won’t weigh you down or feel heavy.

Brooks Ravenna:

This pair is great for someone who wants a lighter shoe that doesn’t feel as bulky. The Ravenna isn’t as plush and cushioned as the Glycerin but provides great support and gives you a springy feel in your run.
